Michele Yu and Cindy Chao come as a package deal. Friends and work partners, they’ve served as Production Designers on numerous movies and television shows, and count among their credits The Fuzees, Much Ado About Nothing, Grandma, and A Black Lady Sketch Show (for which they earned an Emmy nomination). Their latest project is the new Disney+ series American Born Chinese, or ABC for short.
Below the Line chatted with Bel Air’s principal Costume Designer, Queensylvia Akuchie about the unique combination of original costumes, garbs relating to African identity, and ultramodern hip wear that she went for in dressing up the various characters.
Settings on the show, Poker Face range from a Texas barbecue pit to a Tennessee race track, testing the ingenuity of production designer Judy Rhee. Most of Poker Face was shot in the Hudson Valley north of New York City, on a schedule so tight that Rhee’s crews were working on as many as four episodes at a time.
