THE QUEEN SUGAR EFFECT By Kristal Brent Zook
For seven seasons, Ava DuVernay has used her gripping family drama to empower women directors
In 2021, DuVernay launched ARRAY Crew, a database with a special focus on women, people of color, and other underrepresented groups that she had created for below-the-line talent. She worked with Peter Roth, the former chairman of Warner Bros. Television Group, who suggested that the studios themselves finance the venture. “Most got on board very quickly—almost instantly,” says Roth. “There were a few, and I’m not going to mention which ones, but there were a few that were resistant and needed a little bit more convincing.” In the end, every studio and streamer that was invited participated: Warner Bros. Discovery, Disney, Paramount, Amazon Studios, Netflix, Sony Pictures Entertainment, MGM, NBCUniversal, Fox, Apple TV+, Lionsgate, and A24. DuVernay’s original concept went from 500 names on a spreadsheet to more than 10,000 members throughout the US and Canada.
